the West African nation of Cape Verde. In February 1992, the suit says, the Peace Corps' country director, John Grabowski, received a letter falsely accusing Correri of improper sexual behavior with Cape Verdean boys.
Correri denied the accusations and maintained that he was celibate at all times. Two months later Grabowski discharged Correri, according to the suit. But in February this year, a Peace Corps appeal board found the alleged grounds to be insufficient and the acting director of the Peace Corps said he could re-enter in April. Correri says he now is told he cannot be reinstated until next April.
His suit asks immediate reinstatement. It names as defendants, Grabowski and Peace Corps Director Jack Hogan.
New York insurance policies to embrace gay couples
Albany, N.Y.-Activists for gays and lesbians hope that a policy shift by state regulators will encourage many health insurance companies to offer family policies to unmarried partners.
The state Insurance Department on September 29, while pointing out that it could not order insurers to offer this policy, broadened its rules to encourage more companies to move forward.
Health insurance for gays has become a major issue in New York since the emergence of AIDS. The state has more AIDS cases than any other state.
The state Insurance Department has long held that in order to get health insurance for a domestic partner, one person has to be completely dependent economically on the other.
Under the change a person may get-coverage for a domestic partner by proving that

each is mutually dependent on the other.
Such interdependency could be demonstrated by shared ownership of property, shared budgeting and the length of a relationship, the department said. Officials note that the issue could be moot in the next year or so depending on implementation of a federal health care package.
Alabama ACLU files suit on behalf of gay student groups
Montgomery, Ala.-Civil libertarians filed a federal lawsuit September 27 challenging a state law which prevents gay student organizations from receiving funding on university campuses. .
The ACLU of Alabama represents the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Alliance of the University of South Alabama, which was denied funding by the university last winter, the only group so denied.
The legislation, which prohibits state colleges from using public funds or buildings to support any group "that fosters or promotes a lifestyle or actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws" of Alabama, was signed into law by former Gov. Guy Hunt in 1992.
Martin McCaffery, vice president of the ACLU's Alabama group, said the suit is the first challenge to the law in the state. There have been similar lawsuits in other parts of the country.

could raise another $20,000, said artistic director Michael Horne.
The theater lost its annual $40,000 subsidy last month when the Cobb County Commission voted to drop all arts funding.
Two weeks earlier, the commissioners had approved a resolution proclaiming that the "gay lifestyle is incompatible with community values." That measure was prompted by complaints about a Theatre in the Square production of the off-Broadway play Lips Together, Teeth Apart, which discusses AIDS.
FDA recommends approval of ddC for single-drug therapy
Rockville, Md.—A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee recommends approval of ddC as a single-drug therapy against AIDS.
The drug, marketed under the brand name HIVID by Hoffmann-LaRoche Inc., of Nutley, N.J., had been approved previously in combination use with another AIDS drug. Advisory committee suggestions are not binding on the FDA, but the agency usually follows the advice of the panels.
The committee also voted to remove HIVID from a conditional approval under which it had been authorized for use in combination with AZT, or zidovudine. It now would get full approval.
If the FDA follows the committee recommendation, HIVID will become the third drug approved for single-drug therapy against AIDS. The others are AZT and ddI, or didanonsine.
All of the AIDS drugs attack the AIDS virus by blocking the ability of the virus to reproduce. Studies have also shown that all three drugs can be toxic and that some patients who can take one cannot take the others.
